What Four Hours on the Water Actually Feels Like

Imagine stepping off the dock at Port Jefferson Harbor on a clear morning, coffee in hand, the Sound stretching out in front of you, and absolutely nothing on your schedule for the next four hours except fresh air and fishing. No inbox. No commute. No decisions more complicated than which rod to grab. A half day fishing trip sounds simple — and it is — but somehow it ends up being exactly the kind of thing people talk about for weeks afterward. That's the magic of it. Four hours on Long Island Sound has a way of doing more for your mood than a whole weekend of trying to relax.

What a Half Day Fishing Trip Actually Looks Like

Long Island Fishing - Port Jefferson NY

You arrive at 118 West Broadway in Port Jefferson, right at the marina. The boats are already rigged and ready. Our crew is there to greet you, get you set up, and answer any questions before we even leave the dock. There's no rushing, no chaos — just a relaxed, friendly start to the morning.

Once everyone's aboard, we head out onto Long Island Sound. The run to the fishing grounds takes about 30 minutes, and honestly, that ride is worth something all on its own. You're moving through the harbor, past the Port Jefferson Ferry terminal, watching the North Shore coastline open up around you. It's genuinely pretty — the kind of scenery that makes you wonder why you don't do this more often.

Then we're there, and the fishing begins.

Four hours feels just right. It's not a sprint — you have time to settle into the rhythm of it. Cast, wait, feel the line, reel something in. Ask the mate a question. Watch your friend across the deck pull up something bigger than yours. Laugh about it. The morning moves at a pace that feels easy, not rushed, and before you know it you've got a bag of fish and a much better mood than when you left.

Our two vessels — Celtic Quest IV at 70 feet and Celtic Grace at 80 feet — are large enough that nobody's crowded. There's real deck space to spread out, a cabin to duck into if the breeze picks up, and proper restrooms aboard Celtic Grace. These aren't small boats. There's room to move around, find your spot along the rail, and actually enjoy yourself.

Long Island Sound also tends to be gentler than ocean fishing. The swells are typically mild, the ride is smooth, and for most people — including anyone who's a little uncertain about being on the water — it makes for a much more comfortable experience than heading out past the inlet into open ocean.

Everything Is Included — You Just Show Up

This is one of my favorite things to tell people when they call for the first time: you don't have to worry about a thing. We've got everything set up and ready for you when you step aboard.

Every half day fishing trip with Celtic Quest is fully all-inclusive. That means:

  • Fishing rods — already rigged and ready
  • All tackle and bait — our crew handles it
  • Your New York fishing license — included in your ticket price
  • Fish cleaning and filleting — done by our skilled mates at the end of the trip

No last-minute run to the tackle shop. No trying to figure out an online license application the night before. No staring at a whole fish wondering what to do with it. You arrive, you fish, and you go home with a bag of clean fillets.

That last part — the mate cleaning fish at the end of the trip — always draws a little crowd at the rail. It's genuinely impressive to watch, and there's something deeply satisfying about leaving with dinner already done. Someone in your group always ends up going home as the unofficial hero with a cooler full of fresh fillets.

What to bring: A small cooler for your catch, a sandwich or some snacks, sunscreen, and a light jacket — mornings on the Sound can be breezy even in the warmer months. Beer and wine are absolutely welcome aboard. Hard liquor is not permitted.

Take a look at our trip options to see what's available throughout the season. And if you've got questions about what to pack or what to expect, our FAQ page covers it all really well.

What Fish Are You Actually Going to Catch?

Long Island Fishing - Port Jefferson NY

This is the question I love answering, because the answer changes with the season — and that's part of what makes it fun.

Porgies are the reliable heart of our season. They're here from spring through fall, they bite enthusiastically, and they're absolutely delicious. In May and into early June, porgy fishing can be outstanding — fish pile in and the action is hard to beat. Through the summer and into September, they stay a consistent staple. If you've never pulled in a porgy, you're in for a treat.

Fluke show up in May and run into July. There's nothing quite like the excitement of a big fluke coming over the rail. They put up a spirited fight and they're beautiful fish.

Sea bass are a bottom fishing favorite, especially as the season progresses into the warmer months and beyond. Great on the table and even better on the hook.

As summer gives way to fall, things get exciting in a different way. Bluefish and striped bass start showing up with more regularity, and when the bite is on, it's some of the most thrilling fishing of the year. There's a reason our regulars start asking about the fall run by August.

What I always tell people is this: our crew checks conditions before every single trip, and we go where the fish are. The Sound is always full of life — the catch just changes with the season. We also stay completely current on all New York State fishing regulations so you never have to think about size limits or bag limits. If you'd like to look into the current regulations yourself, the New York State DEC keeps them updated on their marine fishing page.

For the most up-to-date picture of what's biting right now, check our latest fishing reports — we update them regularly throughout the season.

Is a Half Day Fishing Trip Right for Your Group?

The short answer is almost certainly yes — and here's why.

Families with kids: Kids take to fishing with an enthusiasm that genuinely never gets old to watch. We recommend ages 5 and up, and our crew is wonderfully patient with young anglers. Four hours is a perfect length for a family trip — long enough to catch fish and have the full experience, short enough that nobody's running out of steam. We offer child rates through age 12, and there's nothing quite like watching a kid reel in their first fish.

First-timers: A half day fishing trip is one of the best ways to try something new. The time commitment is low, the crew handles everything, and you don't need to know a single thing about fishing to have a great time. Our mates love teaching beginners — by the time you're an hour into the trip, you'll feel like you've been doing this for years.

Day-trippers from New York City: Port Jefferson is about two hours from the city and reachable by the LIRR Port Jefferson Branch if you'd rather not drive. Come up in the morning, fish for four hours, grab lunch at one of the many great spots in Port Jefferson Village, wander the waterfront shops, and still be home in time for dinner. It's a full, genuinely memorable day.

Couples and groups of friends: There's something about being on the water together that loosens people up. Conversations happen naturally, there's friendly competition over who catches the biggest fish, and four hours goes by in a way that feels both productive and wonderfully relaxed. People often leave saying they should have done this sooner.

Whatever brings you out, we're glad you're coming.

A Captain's Tip: When to Plan Your Half Day Fishing Trip

We run half day fishing trips from April through late October out of Port Jefferson, and each part of the season has its own character.

Spring — particularly late May through the third week of June — is my personal favorite window to send first-timers out. The porgy fishing is often excellent, the weather is usually beautiful, and there's a real energy in the harbor as the season comes fully alive. June is actually our busiest month of the year, which tells you something — people know that window is special.

Summer brings warm days, reliable bottom fishing, and a festive atmosphere aboard. Fishing can moderate a little compared to the spring peak, but the experience of being out on the Sound on a bright July morning is hard to argue with. A wonderful time for groups and families.

Fall — September especially — is when fishing picks up again in a meaningful way. The waters cool, the fish get active, and the weather often stays very comfortable well into October. October itself offers some of the best fishing of the entire year, though conditions can be variable — something to keep in mind if your plans are weather-sensitive.

Whatever month you're considering, the best advice I can give is to check availability early and get your date on the calendar. Spots fill up, especially on weekends in June. If you have questions about the right trip for your group or the best time of year to come, give us a call at (631) 928-3926 — we're always happy to help you think it through.

We're located at 118 West Broadway, Port Jefferson, NY 11777, right in the Port Jefferson Marina on the North Shore of Long Island.

By car: About two hours from New York City via the Long Island Expressway. Plan to arrive 45 minutes before your trip — you'll want time to park, get settled, and enjoy the harbor before we head out. Parking in Port Jefferson Village is paid and electronic meters only, so make sure you've got a card handy. You're welcome to pull up to the dock first to drop off your cooler and gear, then go park.

After the trip: Port Jefferson Village is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon. There's no shortage of great restaurants and waterfront shops within easy walking distance of the dock. The Steam Room, right near the marina and serving anglers since 1977, is a local institution worth knowing about.

Questions People Usually Ask Before Their First Trip

Do I need any fishing experience? Not at all. Our crew takes care of everything — baiting hooks, showing you how to cast, helping you reel in your first fish. We genuinely enjoy fishing with beginners, and you'll be surprised how quickly it all starts to feel natural.

What should I wear? Dress in layers. Even on warm days, mornings on the Sound can be cool and breezy. Comfortable shoes with a rubber sole are a good idea — leave the open-toed sandals at home.

Can I bring food and drinks? Absolutely. Bring a sandwich, some snacks, whatever you'd like. Beer and wine are welcome aboard. Hard liquor is not permitted. A small soft-sided cooler works great — and you'll want room in it on the way home for your catch.

What if I get seasick? The Sound is typically quite calm, which helps a lot. If you're concerned, an over-the-counter seasickness remedy taken before you arrive is a good idea — follow the package directions, since most work best when taken well before you board. Standing near the middle of the boat and keeping your eyes on the horizon also helps. Our crew has seen it all and is always kind about it.

What happens to the fish I catch? Our mates clean and fillet your catch at the end of the trip. You leave with a bag of fresh fillets, ready for the pan. It's one of the best parts of the whole day.

How do I book? Visit our booking page to check availability and reserve your spot. You can also call us at (631) 928-3926 or email us at Office@CQFleet.com. We're here seven days a week from 9 AM to 5 PM and always happy to answer questions.
