It’s one of the most common questions we hear from first-time anglers: “What if I get seasick?” It’s a fair question — and the honest answer is that the best defense against a rough day isn’t anything you pack. It’s the decisions made before the boat ever leaves the dock.
We Watch the Weather So You Don’t Have To
Our captains track marine forecasts for Long Island Sound closely before every single sailing — wind, seas, and how conditions are expected to change over the course of the trip. This isn’t a formality; it decides where and whether we fish that day.
If It’s Rough, We Adapt — or We Don’t Go
Long Island Sound gives us a real advantage over open-ocean fishing: there are plenty of protected areas to work with. When conditions are less than ideal, we can often find a calmer stretch of water and fish there instead. And when the forecast says it’s simply not going to be a comfortable, safe day on the water, we cancel the trip. A canceled trip can be rebooked — a miserable one can’t be undone.
Prone to Motion Sickness? Call Us Before You Sail
If you or someone in your group tends to get motion sick, give the office a call at (631) 928-3926 before your trip. We’re happy to tell you what we’re expecting for conditions on your sailing date and give you our honest read — including whether a different day that week looks calmer. Weekday and evening trips can also be a good choice if you’d like a quieter boat while you find your sea legs.
And when in doubt, check with your doctor. Everyone’s different, and your doctor is the right person to advise you on managing motion sickness — that’s their department, not ours. Ours is putting you on the calmest water we can find.
The Sound Is a Gentler Place to Start
If you’re picturing an offshore boat pounding through ocean swells, that’s not what a day with us looks like. We fish the protected waters of Long Island Sound, typically 20 minutes to an hour from Port Jefferson Harbor. It’s one of the reasons families with young kids and first-timers make up so much of our crowd — and why our boats have a heated indoor cabin and clean restrooms if anyone needs a break from the rail.
