Frequently Asked Questions

What should I bring on a fishing charter?

The honest answer is: not much. Sunscreen, layers, closed-toe shoes, food and snacks, and a small cooler for drinks. That's really it. Everything fishing-related — rods, reels, bait, tackle, and your New York fishing license — is included in every Celtic Quest fare. Our crew takes care of the rest the moment you step aboard.

Do I need to bring my own fishing rod?

Not at all. Every rod, reel, tackle, and bait is included in your ticket, and our crew rigs everything before you even step aboard. Our mates know exactly what's working on Long Island Sound that day and will set you up perfectly. All you have to do is show up. You can see how it all works when you book your trip.

Do I need a fishing license?

Nope — your New York State saltwater fishing license is included in every Celtic Quest fare. Nothing to print, nothing to buy separately. New York State requires a saltwater fishing license for anglers 16 and older, and ours is covered. One less thing to think about.

What food and drinks should I bring?

Bring whatever sounds good to you — small coolers are very welcome on board. Beer and wine are perfectly fine; just leave the hard liquor at home. If you'd like to grab a bite before you head out, Port Jefferson Village is right there, and the Steam Room has been feeding anglers right near the dock since 1977. It's a great little tradition.

What should I wear on a fishing charter?

Layers are your friend. Mornings on Long Island Sound can be genuinely cool — even in July, that early breeze off the water surprises people. Our season runs April through late fall, and spring and fall trips can be downright brisk, so tuck a windbreaker into your bag even on a sunny forecast. Non-slip, closed-toe shoes are strongly recommended. Leave the flip flops at home.

Captain Des's Tip: "The one thing I tell every first-timer: bring a small dry bag or zip-lock for your phone and wallet. The boat stays dry, but spray happens — and a little protection goes a long way. Everything else? We've got covered."

Should I bring sunscreen and sunglasses?

Yes — and this is honestly the one thing people most often forget. A full day on the water means sun coming at you from every direction, including bouncing off the surface. Long Island Sound on a calm June or July day can be brilliantly bright. Polarized sunglasses are a real bonus if you have them. Pack the sunscreen and reapply it — you'll thank yourself later.

What about seasickness — should I bring medication?

Long Island Sound is generally much calmer than ocean fishing, which helps a great deal. That said, if you know you're sensitive to motion, an over-the-counter remedy taken the night before or the morning of your trip can make a real difference. You can check the NOAA marine forecast for Long Island Sound ahead of time so you know what to expect. We want everyone comfortable and happy out there.

Can I bring kids, and is there anything extra to pack for them?

Kids are absolutely welcome — we love having families aboard. We recommend ages 5 and up, and child rates apply through age 12. Pack extra snacks, a light jacket, and plenty of sunscreen for little ones. Our half-day trips run about four hours, which works wonderfully for younger anglers. Celtic Quest has been taking families out on Long Island Sound for 25 years — the crew is wonderful with kids of all ages. One note: no strollers on the boat.

Is there anything I should leave at home?

Hard liquor stays home — beer and wine are perfectly fine. Beyond that, think small: a backpack or soft-sided cooler is really all you need. Port Jefferson Village has paid parking nearby, so take a look at our directions and parking page before you head out so arrival is smooth and easy.
