Fishing Reports

September 26,2005

Fishing continues to be very good at the middle grounds. The jigging was incredible earlier in the week off Cranes though slowed down on the quarter moon. The bass and blue fishing should be awesome as we approach the next moon.

Porgy fishing was very good the last few days east of the light in the middle grounds. Quality porgies to 2.5 lbs. Fun fall fishing right now!

Right on schedule with the moon tide, the bass and blues were feasting in the middle grounds today. Great action all morning on the incoming tide. Spent the rest of the day picking away at the large and extra large porgies. Great day on the water.

Last night's trip saw great porgy fishing on the change of tide. Lots of big scup on the drift east of the light. The great fall fishing is here and the next few days especially should be fantastic with the good moon tides.

Am Trip – We started the trip by jigging blues at the 11 buoy. It was a very steady pick of blues in 80 feet of water. We also jigged several short bass. Everyone kept 4 or 5 blues and released the rest. We then took the ride out to the middle grounds where we found a good pick of jumbo size scup.

Pm trip- The pm trip was not as productive. We had slack water the the middle of the trip which resulted in a slow pick of scup all night.

Fishing remains very good. Fishing in horrendous conditions yesterday morning with the easterly winds and outgoing tide, we enjoyed a Bail job on the blues! The fish were stacked up off B11 and it was an hour of great diamond jigging to start the day. Porgy fishing was just a pick for the remainder of the trip.

There has been a ton of fish locally from Old Field to Mt Sinai. The evening scup bite remains very good and has been a nice way to end the trip as the sun goes down!

September 9, 2005

Both night have been a bail job on the big blues and bass.

Wed trip – It was all out blitz style fishing for BIG blues and bass with all fares hooking up almost every drift. Fish ranged for 7-12 pounds. Many Blues going over 10 lbs. The pool was taken by a keeper size bass.

Thursdays trip – Again saw excellent diamond jigging on BIG blues. The blues were all over the surface crashing bait. They were feeding on butters and anchovies. By 6pm the fares already had enough of the blues so we steamed out to the middle grounds and finished up the night catching scup.

We weren't able to sail on the day trip yesterday due to the weather. We did get out on the pm trip though and fishing was awesome! Bailed Big porgies till the sun went down! Great night.

September 3, 2005

The past two days have ranged from decent to excellent. Both yesterday and today saw some decent jigging, but only for a short window of time on the incoming tide. Many short bass with a few keepers in the mix.

The porgy fishing on the evening trips remains excellent as the sun set bite has been very very good. Last night on the first of the incoming we had a great catch of nice size porgies drifting east of the light. The day before was also very good.

We have spend all of our time at the Middle Grounds the past few days. Its only going to get better from here!

August 29, 2005

The fishing was on the slow side on the last two day trips with the insane amount of boat traffic for the wicc bluefish contest. The porgy bite continues to be very good though most trips at the middle grounds both day and evening. We have had some great drift fishing east of the light on very big porgies which should hold up from here on out. Today's charter of 4 kept 60 big scup to 2 lbs. Great fishing for the kids for those who are interested.

The bluefish should be biting good on the moon coming up. They disappeared right on time for the bluefish contest as they always do, but now that is past and should pick up closer to the new moon.

Middle Ground Madness has arrived in full effect!!

Today was an all out slaughter on the bass and blues.

We started the trip on a deep wreck for a decent pick of Jumbo scup. Largest scup measured an impressive 17 inches long!! The blues soon showed up and shut down the bite so we decided to switch over.

That is when the Bail began. All out mayhem ensued as all rods doubled over with blues and bass for the next three hours. Screams could be heard from miles away as helpless customers who had never been fishing before struggled with all their might to conquer the elusive striped bass and/or blue.

We even took a break at one point due to a mandatory mid slaughter cleansing of the boat. After the boat was clean and our customers rested, we proceeded to get the boat disgustingly bloody and nasty again within minutes as the fish continued to fly over the rails at a torrid pace. All parties involved easily limited out on blues to 13 lbs. Lots of short bass and some keepers as well.

The rip in the middle was loaded with bass and big blues for almost a mile stretch. The amount of anchovies and butterfish was incredible. It just doesn't get any better.

Also, yesterdays afternoon trip saw some great porgy fishing. These evening trips especially have been excellent for the Big Scup. Middle Grounds is again live and well!!!!

Pile of Bass on the fish finder

Every rod was doubled over with fish at this point. The fish finder looked like this almost every drift.

We did not sail the last few trips with the lousy weather. Finally got out again last night for a Bail Job on Big Porgies!

Many guys limited out on the big 1-2 lb oven stuffer roasters!

The blue fishing has been tremendous in Smithtown Bay. Hopefully the great fishing will continue forever!
