Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to bring my own fishing rod or tackle?
Not at all. Rods, reels, tackle, and bait are all included in your fare — you don't need to bring a single piece of gear. If you're an experienced angler who prefers your own setup, you're absolutely welcome to bring it. Our crew rigs everything for everyone else based on what's running that day on the Sound. Just show up and we'll take care of the rest.
Do I need a fishing license?
Your fishing license is included in the ticket price on every Celtic Quest trip — no extra step needed. New York State requires a saltwater fishing registry, which is covered when you fish with a licensed party boat like ours. Our crew stays current on all New York fishing regulations, so that's one less thing on your list when you're figuring out what to bring striped bass fishing.
What should I wear on the boat?
Layers are your best friend. Even on a warm morning, Long Island Sound feels noticeably cooler once the boat is moving — especially on fall striper trips in September and October when mornings start quite crisp. Spring runs in May and June are usually lovely, but the ride out still has a chill to it early in the day.
Closed-toe, non-slip shoes are a must — sneakers are perfect. Skip the sandals and flip-flops. Add a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen, because the glare off the water catches people off guard even on cloudy days. If the forecast looks uncertain, tuck a light rain layer in your bag.
Can I bring food and drinks?
Absolutely — bring whatever you like. Small coolers are welcome aboard. Beer and wine are perfectly fine; we just ask that you leave the hard liquor at home. We don't have onboard food service, but Port Jefferson Village has you well covered. The Steam Room, right near the dock and serving anglers since 1977, is a Port Jeff institution and a wonderful spot to grab something before you head down. Our directions page has more help for planning your arrival.
What should I bring for kids on a striped bass trip?
All the same basics apply — layers, sun protection, and closed-toe shoes. Beyond that, bring snacks your kids actually enjoy. A well-fed kid on a boat is a happy kid. Life jackets are onboard, and our crew is wonderfully experienced with young anglers. We recommend ages 5 and up, and child rates are available through age 12. Parents are usually more nervous than their kids — and the kids always want to come back.
Should I bring cash?
Yes, and it matters. Our crew works for tips, and the customary gratuity is around 20% in cash. The mate who cleans and bags your fish at the end of the trip puts real skill and care into that work. Someone always goes home with a beautiful bag of fillets and becomes the hero at dinner — and that's the mate making it happen.
Parking in Port Jefferson Village runs on electronic meters, so a card or your phone works fine for that. Full details on parking and getting to the dock are on our directions page.
Is there anything I should NOT bring?
Hard liquor, strollers, and oversized bags are the main things to leave behind — space on the boat is shared, and simpler is always better. Most importantly, don't bring any worries about your experience level. Our crew genuinely loves teaching newcomers, and they'll have you set up and fishing before you know it. Show up, enjoy the ride, and let us handle the rest.
When do striped bass run out of Port Jefferson?
There are typically two windows: a spring run that can be quite good from May into June, and a fall run that usually builds from August through October. Both depend on current conditions and tidal movement, so dates shift a little year to year. The fall jigging trips — when bass and blues are running together — can be genuinely spectacular. That seasonality also affects what to bring striped bass fishing in the fall versus the spring; think an extra warm layer for October mornings. Check our fishing reports for the latest on what's running.
